Five restorative yoga poses for midlife women

Five Restorative Yoga Poses That Are Particularly Good for Midlife Women

Restorative yoga is sometimes misunderstood as yoga for people who can’t do the real thing. It’s actually one of the most sophisticated and physiologically intelligent practices available and for women in midlife, it offers something that most movement practices simply don’t.

The premise is simple. You hold supported poses for extended periods, typically five to fifteen minutes using props to allow the body to release completely rather than working to maintain a shape. The nervous system responds to these poses by shifting out of sympathetic activation, the stress response, and into parasympathetic dominance, the rest and repair state. For perimenopausal and menopausal women whose nervous systems are often running hot due to hormonal fluctuation, this shift is genuinely therapeutic.

Here are five poses that I return to repeatedly with midlife clients and in my own practice.

Supported Child’s Pose with a bolster. Place a bolster lengthways on your mat, sit back towards your heels and fold forward over the bolster, turning your head to one side. The compression on the front body is deeply calming. The gentle traction on the lower back releases chronic tension. Stay five to ten minutes, turning your head to the other side halfway through.

Legs Up the Wall. Lie on your back with your legs resting vertically up a wall, a folded blanket under your lower back if needed. This gentle inversion reverses the fluid pooling that comes from standing all day, supports venous return, and has a measurable calming effect on the nervous system. Ten to fifteen minutes here is worth more than most things you could do in that time.

Supported Bound Angle Pose. Lie back over a bolster with the soles of your feet together and your knees open, supported by folded blankets. This opens the chest and front body — the opposite of the forward rounding most of us carry from screens and daily life and creates a gentle opening through the inner groin and pelvic area. Deeply restorative for women who carry tension in the pelvis.

Supported Bridge Pose. Place a block or bolster under your sacrum and let your pelvis rest heavily on the support. This gentle backbend opens the hip flexors, chronically shortened in people who sit, and creates a mild inversion effect that supports the adrenal glands sitting just above the kidneys. For women dealing with fatigue, this pose is particularly nourishing.

Savasana with support. A bolster under the knees, a folded blanket under the head, and an eye pillow if you have one. Ten minutes of complete supported stillness. Not sleep, conscious rest. The nervous system integration that happens in a well-supported Savasana is the point of the whole practice, and it’s worth taking seriously rather than rushing.

You don’t need a yoga studio or a teacher to practice these poses. You need a mat, a bolster or firm cushion, a few blankets, and ten to fifteen minutes of uninterrupted time. That’s genuinely all.
